Sol Diaz is a two spirit Pech metal smith, multidisciplinary artist, curator, and co-founder of queer metal smith. Their work centers ancestral renovation and storytelling by honoring their lineage to push forward a vision of indigenous futurism. Through this approach, they aim to decolonize the colonial ideologies surrounding sacred indigenous jewelry from Honduras.
Using materials such as recycled sterling silver, precious and semi precious stones, wood, and patinas. They conjure pieces that open up a dialogue about generational blockages and pathways to liberation. The materials are twisted, texturized, and forged into forms that appear both like relics of the past and amulets of the future.
Sol was exhibited in three galleries this past November as a part of New York City Jewelry Week: the Bevier Gallery at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Urban Glass for Queer Metals; Flourish exhibition, and the Hannah Traore Gallery for Ndaki Na exhibition.
